Electric vehicles have come a long way in the last decade. What began as a green alternative lacking style and driving appeal has now morphed into a segment of fun-to-drive cars, trucks, and SUVs loaded with comfort and convenience features rivaling their gasoline counterparts'. While Cadillac doesn't currently have an electric vehicle in its lineup, the carmaker has a much grander plan in store. According to a 2019 announcement, Cadillac intends to go all-electric by 2030, ditching the internal combustion engine altogether. more Cadillac's EV Transition Timeline Cadillac will begin introducing all-electric vehicles with the 2023 model year. As it stands now, the 2023 Cadillac Lyriq will be their first all-electric vehicle and will battle it out in the crossover SUV segment. Following on its heels will be the Celestiq, an all-electric luxury sedan. In addition, the company has confirmed a second crossover SUV around the size of the XT4 will compete in the compact SUV category soon after the Celestiq. Not stopping there, Cadillac has plans for a three-row crossover SUV, larger than the Lyriq yet smaller than their future Escalade -inspired full-size electric SUV. Cadillac joins Bentley, Aston Martin, Volvo, Mini, and Jaguar as the automakers who plan to end the production of gas-powered cars by 2030. But there's some good news for those who still want a gasoline powertrain from Cadillac. The company will continue to produce the popular Escalade SUV and CT4 and CT5 sedans for the foreseeable future. That said, Cadillac has ceased designing any new concepts for internal combustion engine vehicles, effectively ending the company's 120-year run of building cars powered by gas engines. Ultium Battery Power GM has created the unique Ultium battery to power Cadillac electric vehicles and every EV in the GM family. The Ultium battery uses a large format with pouch-style cells, which allow engineers to stack the cells horizontally or vertically inside the battery. Now, designers can maximize energy storage within the battery while gaining the flexibility of different layouts needed across the varied vehicle designs. Ultium batteries come in sizes from 50 to 200 kilo-watt-hours. This spectrum could increase estimated vehicle ranges up to 400 miles or more on a single charge. Also, a Ultium battery boosts speeds, with cars outfitted with this component expected to go from 0-60 mph in as little as three seconds. GM's Ultium-powered cars come with Level 2 and DC fast-charging capability. Insiders confirm that 400-volt battery packs with 200 kW fast-charging capability will debut on the cars and SUVs while the GM truck platform will use an 800-volt battery pack with up to 350 kW fast-charging ability. GM has invested considerable time and money into developing its electric motors. These motors will support the company's front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel drive, and performance all-wheel-drive vehicles. Can Cadillac Make It Work? With the capital of GM 100% behind Cadillac, auto industry experts believe Cadillac can and will make EVs work for several reasons. GM's modular approach produces economies of scale in several key areas. A partnership with LG Chem has driven down the cost of batteries, and the partnership expects continual advancements to reduce production costs further. The new global platform for EVs gives the company flexibility like never before. The electric motors and other vehicle systems were engineered to minimize parts and complexity over the entire lineup. For instance, GM has plans for 19 EV battery and drive system configurations compared to the over 500 internal combustion engine powertrain units currently available. Ultimately, the rising acceptance of EVs will propel Cadillac forward. Industry leaders have forecasted sales to more than double from 2025 to 2030, ending with around 3 million electric vehicles sold annually. That number could grow beyond that as the cost of ownership continues to fall and charging station availability increases. 2023 Cadillac Lyriq SUV The Lyriq SUV kicks off the all-electric movement for Cadillac, with the 2023 model year expected to hit the streets in the early part of 2022. Beginning in September 2021, drivers can reserve the first production models. Cadillac has designed the Lyriq superbly, giving it modern styling cues such as an all-glass roof. The aggressive front fascia features a Black Crystal grille that uses three-dimensional texture that emits depth and precision. LED headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights come in the signature vertical Cadillac style. The Lyriq's bulging hood and fenders combine with soft curves and lines for an athletic posture. Rolling on standard low-profile tires wrapped on 20-inch wheels designed to match the grille, the Lyriq projects a luxury experience. Slipping inside the cockpit, you immediately sense the future. Cadillac's Inteluxe seating material comes in Sky Cool Gray or Noir and blends with polished aluminum, natural textures, and unique jewel-like embellishments to deliver a premium look and feel. A 33-inch curved driver information display stretches before you, its touch screen capability within easy reach. The display can project over one billion colors for a magnificent driving experience. You'll enjoy Cadillac's Super Cruise technology, the first hands-free driving system. With over 200,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada, the Super Cruise driver-assist system will elevate your drive. While the EPA hasn't tested the Lyriq's range, Cadillac estimates the Lyriq will achieve over 300 miles on a single charge. Cadillac says the rear-wheel-drive Lyriq will put out an impressive 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Since the average Cadillac driver travels under 50 miles in a day, the Lyriq has plenty of power available. Organized in 1970, The Grand Forks County Historical Society initiated a goal to provide services aimed at helping the community better understand Grand Forks' history. In order to welcome the community into the museum for this annual event, museum staff must remove the breakables and prepare the seven buildings for the scare-fest. Each year, they base the haunted house on a different theme. Past themes include works by famed American author Edgar Allan Poe and famous horror movies. Legends of Terror is usually held for only two nights out of the year in mid-October. Entry is typically $10 per participant. Because of the nature and scare factor, kids under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Check the Grand Forks County Historical Society website for updated information to make your plans this fall. Acres of Terror In just under a two-hour drive from Grand Forks, you can visit Leonard for a scare that'll delight. As one of the most popular haunted houses to visit in North Dakota, Acres of Terror welcomes people of all ages and has something for everyone. Challenge your problem-solving skills and nerves as you make your way through their scary corn maze with a surprise lurking around every bend. Visit the old schoolhouse, where you will hear the echoes of children laughing and see the walls bedecked with Halloween decorations to make your heart pound. You'll find the Acres of Terror haunted house 16 miles south of Casselton on North Dakota Highway 18. Adult general admission passes are $25, youth under 10 years old are $13, and guests who are in the military receive a $2 discount with a valid ID. Parking is free and doors open at dusk. The Crypt at Jacobs Manor While you're in Red River Valley, stop at another Leonard favorite scare spot: The Crypt at Jacobs Manor. In lieu of a general admission fee, they run on donations. They accept your non-perishable foods donations as entrance to benefit the Fargo Women's and Children's Shelter. This is a wonderful destination for a fun family outing to kick off the trick-or-treating festivities. It's also a great activity for a first date to bond and get to know each other. You get to have fun, help the community, and take in some of the unique and handmade decorations created by the artists and volunteers that host this spooktacular event to do good. Due to these factors, you should adjust your expectations for your EV's driving range during the winter. By doing this, you can avoid running your battery flat while you're on the go. Check Your Antifreeze Levels Antifreeze, also known as engine coolant, plays an important role during the winter by preventing your engine from freezing up. However, antifreeze needs to be changed regularly to work effectively. The Car Care Council recommends flushing your antifreeze every two years, so if it's been longer than that since you last did this task, it's time to take action. Grand Forks, North Dakota, has a rich history of growth and development along with trials and tribulations. Starting as a trading post as the country's population began to migrate to the west, Grand Forks incorporated as a city in 1881. As the riverfront community grew and expanded, so did the number of fascinating buildings and structures recording its evolution. Here's a list of some interesting local historical sites of Grand Forks that highlight the fascinating development of the area. more Flood Memorial Monument Image via Flickr by Ross Griff via CC BY 2.0 While the Flood Memorial Monument may not be very old, it serves as a marker of the significant catastrophic floods in Grand Forks. The monument is a visible reminder of the destruction from the flooding of the Red River, especially the devastating flood of April 18, 1997, that decimated Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. Located near the Sorlie Bridge that spans the Red River, the Flood Memorial Monument indicates the peak height of the water during the worst floods of Grand Forks' history. After the most destructive 1997 flood, the city redesigned the flood path by widening the river overflow area. They removed roads and buildings near the river and built protective dikes and flood walls. This created a significant open space along the river. This became the beautiful Memorial Park, which is home to the Flood Memorial Monument. Memorial Park is part of the Greater Grand Forks Greenway, which entails many miles of paved trails for walking or biking along both sides of the Red River. There is still sometimes water surrounding the Flood Memorial during the spring thaw or high waters. The Flood Memorial Monument and Memorial Park honor the significance of the city's historical floods and the resulting destruction and reconstruction. Historic Downtown Grand Forks The Historic Downtown Grand Forks area was greatly damaged by the Red River flood of 1997, when the water was 4 feet deep throughout the Downtown Historic District. The fires that followed the flood destroyed nine of the city's major buildings. Today, the historic downtown encompasses almost 70 surviving buildings, some built as early as the 1880s. These historic buildings include the Grand Forks City Hall, the County Courthouse, the Griffith's Building, and the Metropolitan Opera House. If you would like more information about the buildings or history of the area, the Grand Forks Historic Preservation Commission offers a brochure of the Downtown Historic District. Metropolitan Opera House The beautiful Romanesque architecture of the Metropolitan Opera House (the Met) makes this building stand out as one of the most impressive structures in Grand Forks. Constructed in 1890, the Met soon became one of the most popular opera houses in the region. The Opera House provided live opera and theater performances for nearly 50 years. Around 1940, it was gutted and became a bowling alley. It continued to house various businesses over the years, but the once impressive building started to fall into disrepair. The Opera House survived the flood of 1997, albeit with significant damage. The city nearly tore the building down, but the Historic Preservation Commission stepped in to save it. It was converted into an apartment building through an extensive renovation and restoration in the early 2000s. The exterior was restored to its 1890s appearance and the inside now consisted of high-end apartments with business space on the first floor. The restoration left exposed brick walls and construction beams in the inner apartments to preserve the beauty of the building's design. The Met is located at 116 South Third Street and today is known as Opera House Lofts. Thomas D. Campbell House Thomas D. Campbell House was originally a pioneer homestead in 1879 when Grand Forks was just a small settlement. General Thomas D. Campbell Jr. was born in this house, who served in both world wars and eventually became the largest producer of wheat in the U.S. Perhaps the most interesting fact about the house is the fact that the Gothic Revival style exterior was constructed directly over the original log cabin. Log cabins were popular during this era, and it seems that it was a common practice for homesteaders to construct a simple log cabin and eventually add on to it, replace it, or even engulf it, as the Campbells did, with a more substantial structure. The house's style is significant because it's unique in the Red River Valley region. Today, the structure houses the Myra Museum and is furnished with decor from the early 20th century. The original log cabin walls are visible from inside the house. Thomas D. Campbell House is on the National Register of Historic Places and you can find it at 2405 Belmont Road in Grand Forks. University of North Dakota Oxford House Oxford House was built in 1902 in the Colonial Revival style to be a stately home for University of North Dakota presidents. The house had all of the modern conveniences of the time, including speaking tubes, a dumbwaiter, and a telephone. The house also featured three fireplaces, five bedrooms on the second floor, and a large ballroom in the attic. Until 1954, presidents of the university lived in the house. After the university built the new president's residence, Oxford House gradually fell into disrepair. Eventually, an alumni group gathered funds to rehabilitate and refurbish the house. For several years it was home for the university's Alumni Association, and today it's a reception venue for campus functions. Oxford House is found at the University of North Dakota, Campus Drive, in Grand Forks. We hope this list inspires you to get more in touch with the history of Grand Forks. Since originally organizing in 1880, two years after the 12 original settlers came to the area, Drayton has evolved from being an important boat landing on the Red River to now being known as the "Catfish Capital of the North." Kiddos interested in Drayton's history would love visiting the Ox Cart Trails Historical Society museum at 201 Almeron Avenue. Call 701-454-6103 for an appointment and have their knowledgeable staff give you a guided tour. Check out beautiful Schumacher Park, as well, where you and the kids can set up camp in one of the 24 sites and play sports like basketball, softball, and tennis. The outdoor swimming pool is open Memorial Day through the summer, and you can go canoeing on the Red or Pembina rivers. If you want to teach your kids a little about owning a business, you could even rent out the concession stand on the premises and make some money from fellow campers!
