This 80-acre preserve has never been plowed or harvested, so you can see what a true mesic prairie ecosystem looks like. Owned by The Nature Conservancy, this critical habitat is home to birds such as the short-eared owl, yellow rails, and Nelson's sparrows. Native mammals such as prairie dogs, white-tailed jackrabbits, and prairie voles live in this pristine area. As you stroll along the designated walkways during the spring and summer, you'll see white lady's slippers, Hall's sedge grass, blue bottle gentian, and several species of native prairies grasses. Make sure to bring a camera to take photos of the 8-foot tall sunflowers when they're in full bloom. Malmberg Prairie SNA is about 11 miles west of Crookston. Tympanuchus Wildlife Management Area Another great place to see native flora and fauna is at Tympanuchus Wildlife Management Area 11 miles east of Crookston. This 848-acre preserve is home to deer, grouse, and the greater prairie chicken that performs its booming and spectacular mating ritual. This important wildlife management area is a vital wildlife corridor that connects several other wildlife management areas including Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge. As you wander through grasslands and small shrubs, keep your eyes open for northern harrier hawks, western meadowlarks, and upland sandpipers that feed along the seasonal stream beds. Mammals include jackrabbits, deer, moose, and badgers. During the growing season, you can see native grasses and blazing starflowers, and coneflowers blooming. Once you park in the parking lot, follow the signs to help you walk along the designated trails. Agassiz Recreational Trail Hike, bike, and explore the 53-mile multi-use Agassiz Recreational Trail that runs between Crookston and Ulen. While you can tackle the whole length of the Agassiz Recreational Trail, you can find shorter parts of the trail to explore. You'll cross several rivers and creeks as you cruise the trail including the Wild Rice and Sand Hill rivers as well as Mashaug Creek. During the warm summer months, you'll share the trail with equestrians, backpackers, mountain bikers, and ATV riders. When the snow hits, enjoy cross-country skiing and snowmobiling along the Agassiz Recreational Trail. This trail was once a railroad bed and today it runs parallel to State Highways 32 and 102. Plan your trip exploring the Agassiz Trail by making stops for lunch, coffee, or overnight stays in the towns of Ulen, Twin Valley, Fertile, or Gary. The northern part of the trail starts just south of Crookston off of State Route 9. Thief River Falls Head about 40 miles northeast of Crookston to the town and recreational area of Thief River Falls. Once you head out of the charming town of Thief River Falls, you have access to over 500 miles of trails of Northern Minnesota forests, prairies, and wildlife management areas. Thief River Falls gets its name from the waterfall created where Red River Lake flows into Thief River. Arctic Cat snowmobiles are built in the town of Thief River Falls so it's easy to grab a snowmobile and explore the surrounding area. Cruise along the Wapiti Trail with takes you to Fourtown, or make your way to Red Lake Falls on your snowmobile to see the frozen water spectacle. For a mellow stroll, take the 7-mile scenic River Walk with its paved trail that goes along the Thief River and connects several parks like Northland Woods and Centennial Park. Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge Whether you want to bird watch, take photographs, or hunt, Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge offers numerous recreational opportunities to partake in. The beautiful wetlands and prairie of the 35,575-acre Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge begins at the headwaters of the Mississippi River and is a tallgrass prairie ecosystem. The wetlands and uplands are crucial breeding grounds and nesting areas for over 164 species of native and migratory birds. Common birds found with the refuge include burrowing owls, the greater prairie chicken, upland sandpiper, and yellow rail. The wetlands are home to several amphibian species including the northern leopard frog. Mammals include white-tailed deer, jackrabbits, and moose. Before you head over to Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge, make sure you dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, a sun hat, and bring food, water, and a thermos of hot coffee or tea. Several parking lots have maps of the area to help you navigate throughout the refuge. Don't forget to bring binoculars and a camera. Northern Cass Pass Trail Head south about 40 miles toward Fargo and hike or bike the newly developed Northern Cass Pass Trail. This 6-mile nonmotorized trail connects the small communities of Hunter and Arthur along an abandoned rail bed. The trail has natural surfaces as well as smooth asphalt milled surfaces and in the future, the trail will have pavement making it easily accessible for all levels of walkers and bicyclists. As you travel along the trail, you'll cross reinforced bridges, and you'll walk or bike through an arboretum corridor featuring native North Dakota trees, shrubs, plants, and flowers. You'll pass through farmlands, past grain silos, and irrigation canals. You'll go by prairie lands and forests and see wildflowers and grasses blooming in the spring and summer. Keep your eyes open for prairie chickens, grouse, northern harriers, and short-eared owls. There are also two period houses to explore along with the Myra Museum, which exhibits many different relics of Grand Fork's history. If you want a place where you can hear something new, this is the place to go. Along with the music, Brick and Barley also has some great craft beer. The bar has almost 50 beers on tap, with many of them unique to Brick and Barley. Make sure to stop by on Thursdays for BARGO and Karaoke. Bar bingo runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. with prizes that include gift cards to Brick and Barley, and the karaoke starts at 10 p.m. They have a new karaoke system that is easy to use, with an app you can download to enter the queue to sing and choose your song. If you prefer to just listen, you can sit back and relax at your table and watch the show. One of the performers you might catch on stage at Brick and Barley is the Dueling Duo, a pair of dueling pianists who put on a fun, entertaining, and funny show filled with music, amazing voices, and hilarious choreography. The Backstage Project The Backstage Project is one of the newer concert venues to open in Grand Forks. You'll find it tucked away in the back of the Empire Arts Center in what used to be the staging area behind the theater. It's now a small music and social area where you can see live performances on a smaller scale. The small space has room for about 60 people who can relax on the couches, sit at tables, or hang out by the bar. It's the perfect spot to enjoy music while chatting with friends and a unique venue unlike any other you'll find in the Grand Forks area. Since its opening, this small, unique venue has hosted many local musicians and featured events such as the Songwriter Showcase. The Alerus Center The Alerus Center is a large event venue and the premier entertainment facility in Grand Forks. The arena is a 100,000 square foot space designed to host big events, but the space can also be cut down for smaller events. If you're looking for a big-name concert, Luke Combs is on the schedule for the fall of 2021, and later in the year, you can also see Brantley Gilbert on his Fire'T Up Tour that was originally scheduled for May. In December, Home Free will play at the Alerus. The Aquarium Just outside of Grand Forks County in Fargo, you can listen to live music at the Aquarium. This popular nightclub sits above Dempsey's Public House in downtown Fargo and is one of the city's hottest clubs. It's a small venue, making it perfect for listening to local artists, but it also draws nationally known musicians. The Aquarium hosts a diverse selection of music genres, so you can head here to listen to your favorite style of music, but also stop by to hear something new. Some of the past headliners include The Melvins, Trampled by Turtles, and Father John Misty. The Windbreak You'll also find the Windbreak in nearby Fargo. It's one of Fargo's best live music venues and hosts a wide variety of music genres. While listening to the band, you can also enjoy the drink specials, blackjack, pool, and the fun and entertaining atmosphere. The Windbreak features live bands every Thursday through Sunday with performers on stage playing everything from country to pop and rock. Some of the upcoming events at the Windbreak include Tyler Hammond, a rising star on the country scene. Tyler has had the opportunity to play onstage with some of his idols, including Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan, and he still loves to play in Fargo. 32 Below will also hit the stage this spring at the Windbreak. The city of Fargo, North Dakota, sits along the Red River of the North, which forms the border between North Dakota and Minnesota. Moorhead, Minnesota, sits on the other side of the river, and the two cities combined make up the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area. Fargo may be known for the movie named after the city, starring William H. Macy, but it's much more than this. It's the Most Populous Fargo in the U.S. The United States has six cities named Fargo. The one in North Dakota has the largest population, with over 113,000 residents. Fargo sits in the middle of the frontier and has beautiful landscapes surrounding it. Its location, combined with the landscape, results in some of the most incredible sunsets you can find anywhere in the world, almost every night. 2. It Used to Be Underwater Less than 10 thousand years ago, Fargo and Moorhead were 200 feet under the surface of Lake Agassiz. This was a huge inland sea formed at the end of the last ice age. The waters receded over thousands of years, leaving behind rich black soil. This soil makes the Red River Valley one of the most fertile farming areas in the world. 3. The Great Fire of 1893 In June 1893, a fire broke out on the 500 block of Front Street, which is now known as Main Avenue. There is some debate about how the fire started. Some say it started behind Herzman's Dry Goods Store, and others say it started because someone threw ashes out the rear of the Little Gem Restaurant. During this time, most of the storefronts were wooden, and on the day of the fire, the winds were gusting at 30 mph. The fire quickly spread out of control, and even though a firehouse sat right on Front Street, the firefighters were out hosing down the dusty streets, so the firehouse was empty. The fire destroyed businesses along 31 blocks, and 350 buildings burned to the ground. 4. Fargo Isn't Cold All the Time There is no disputing that the winters in Fargo get cold, with averages down as low as minus-3 degrees that feel even colder with the wind. The city averages about 52 inches of snow every winter, but the cold and snowy winters are just a piece of the puzzle. Fargo also has mild summer weather. The warm season goes from May to September, with an average high of 70 degrees. The average high temperature in July gets up to 83 degrees. 5. It's a Tough City for Meteorologists The Weather Channel voted Fargo the toughest weather city in America. The Weather Channel set up the competition using an NCAA-style bracket, and Fargo came out on top. It defeated Juneau, Alaska; even though it has less precipitation, it has more dramatic weather overall, including its infamous cold, the potential for dangerous thunderstorms, and intense summer heat. Fargo sits in Blizzard Alley, an area that gets more blizzards than other areas, and with all the snow it gets in winter, it can have spring floods. 6. F-M Area Has Pro Baseball The F-M area has had a pro baseball team since the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks debuted in 1996. The RedHawks play in the American Associated of Professional Baseball, which is a Partner League of Major League Baseball. The team plays home games at Newman Outdoor Field. The franchise record through 2020 is 1332-935. 7. What's in a Name? The first settlers arrived in Fargo in 1871. These early settlers staked out homesteads at the point where the Northern Pacific Railroad crossed over the Red River, and railroads played a significant role in the development of the city. Fargo was named after William G. Fargo, one of the Wells-Fargo Express Company co-founders and a director of the Northern Pacific Railroad. 8. Divorce Capital of the West In the 1800s, the Legislature for the Dakota Territory passed a divorce law that allowed applicants to begin the process immediately upon their arrival in the territory. This law, along with many lawyers, earned the city its unique nickname. In 1877, lawmakers amended the code to require three months of residency for a divorce. Because of the easy divorce laws, unhappily married people from all around the country would hop on the Northern Pacific and head to Fargo to get a divorce. Hotels and restaurants popped up so they could live and eat in luxury while waiting the three months. 9. The Flooding Problem Fargo's location on the Red River results in some challenges due to spring flooding. This is the only river in the world to flow northward, which means that melting snow and ice, along with runoff from the tributaries, create ice dams in Fargo and cities north of Fargo. These can cause the river to overflow. Since the Red River Valley is flat, it leads to overland flooding. The minor flood stage in Fargo starts at 18 feet, with major flooding at 30 feet. In 1997, the Red River rose to a record 39.5 feet in Fargo. Grand Forks, which sits 65 miles downstream, experienced massive flooding. The river crested at 54 feet, and over 50,000 people had to evacuate. The 1997 flood became known as a 500-year flood. In 2009, another major flood saw Fargo-Moorhead reach record levels. The river was expected to reach 43 feet but crested at 40.82 feet. This time, the residents won the war against the rising water by stacking sandbags up to 41 feet high. 10. Super Cruise is only available for use on limited-access highways as a semi-autonomous hands-free driving system. This system does require driver attention at all times to operate, so if you think you can set it and then go about reading the morning paper, it doesn't quite work that way. Cadillac uses two advanced technologies, combined with many radar sensors and cameras, to operate Super Cruise. The driver attention system works with the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) map data to create this hands-free driving experience. This system needs to provide a lot of information about the road to both the driver and the vehicle to work. In order for Super Cruise to work, you need to have the adaptive cruise control enabled. Then, it's as simple as tapping the Super Cruise button mounted on the steering wheel. When the IP symbol lights along with the steering wheel's light bar, then you're ready to cruise along hands-free. The only thing you need to do is keep your eyes on the road. Super Cruise requires a driver's full attention to operate. There's a small camera that uses infrared lights mounted on the steering column to monitor the driver's attention. You can turn off the Super Cruise by either pressing the gas pedal or pressing the button on the steering wheel again. It automatically shuts off if the driver's attention isn't on the road or ignores warning such as light bar flashes, audible warnings, or seat vibrations. If the camera senses that your eyes have been off the road for more than four or five seconds, these warnings will be activated to try to redirect your attention. If you're no longer paying attention and warnings aren't doing the trick, the system will first deactivate the Super Cruise but can also bring your car to a stop and alert OnStar. Super Cruise works much like the other assisted driving systems by using the real-time data available from GPS, radars, and cameras on the vehicle. Super Cruise adds one more piece of technology to the mix. The LiDAR-scanned map uses technology to survey and scan your surroundings to detect objects in order to build out 3D maps in near real-time. This piece of technology is the key to hands-free driving. Advantages of Cadillac Super Cruise While you're not able to watch funny cat videos or read a book while driving, there are some advantages to a hands-free driving experience. Super Cruise allows you to have your hands available while driving, maintain a constant pace, and keep you centered in the lane. You're free to dig in your handbag, eat your burger, or grab a quick sip of coffee, as long as your eyes remain on the road ahead of you. You can even change lanes using Super Cruise by simply activating the turn indicator. Doing so will cause the Super Cruise to look for a gap in traffic. Not only do the cameras and sensors search for an upcoming gap big enough for your vehicle to slide into, but they also watch for traffic that is moving at a faster pace to avoid collision with a fast-approaching vehicle. Once you're centered in your new lane, a message will remind you to turn off your indicator. Updates to Cadillac Super Cruise The ability to change lanes is one of the updates to the Super Cruise since 2017. Another update relates to enabling the system. Previously, the driver would turn on adaptive cruise control and then hit the dedicated button for Super Cruise, but Super Cruise wouldn't engage until the car was perfectly centered in the lane. Now, once you activate it, the system will take over the steering and center itself. The newer Super Cruise system also has improved software for speed control and steering to make the driving experience smoother, even when driving hands-free. The system also slows the vehicle down in a more human-like manner when changing lanes or coming up on a curve. There's also updated map information added to this next-generation Super Cruise.
