Cadillac plans on producing only electric vehicles by 2030, discontinuing its gas-powered models entirely. Skeptics cast a wary eye at the idea, while electric vehicle proponents applaud the ambitious plan. Moreover, industry insiders believe it not only will happen but could happen even sooner. The rising acceptance of electric vehicles and the growing charging station network has most pundits believing the EV market will boom over the next 6-8 years.

Enter the Lyriq, the first all-electric SUV from Cadillac. Finally, there’s an electric luxury SUV with the power and comfort you expect from Cadillac with the fun-to-drive capability you want from an SUV. Cadillac plans on releasing the Lyriq as a 2023 model year sometime in 2022, and you can reserve your Lyriq beginning in September 2021. As the reservation date quickly approaches, let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from Cadillac’s first all-electric SUV.

2023 Cadillac Lyriq

The Cadillac Lyriq features the sublime styling of modern luxury with an all-glass roof that lets in all the light into the airy cabin. A front fascia centers on the Black Crystal grill that radiates depth and precision through three-dimensional textured patterns. LED headlights and taillights brighten up the night, while vertical daytime running lights add signature style and safety.

Also, Cadillac uses 736 LED lights to choreograph lighting as you approach and walk away from your Lyriq. The lighting begins with the Cadillac crest on the Lyriq’s grille before dancing along the entire exterior. Once you enter the Lyriq, ambient lighting highlights the tiniest of details as you prepare to drive.

Your luxury experience continues when you tune in your AKG 19-speaker audio system made exclusively for Cadillac. AKG placed the speakers to optimize sound and limit distortion. AKG considered every detail, even putting speakers in the front headrest for an immersive listening experience.

Soft curves around the wheel wells and a bulging hood speak to the Lyriq’s athleticism. Low-profile tires wrapped on 20-inch wheels with the same 3-D styling cues as the grille provide a dancer’s elegance as it rolls by. The wheels were engineered for luxurious comfort, using sensors to communicate and adjust the suspension for a smooth, quiet ride.

Entering the Lyriq cabin, you see the future all around you. Cadillac uses Inteluxe, a premium seating material that adds durability to its luxurious appearance. The soft contours in colors of Sky Cool Gray or Noir blend with the natural textures, polished aluminum appliques, and signature jewel-like embellishments, delivering that sophisticated refinement you expect in a Cadillac.

The future extends across the curved 33-inch driver information display, complete with touchscreen capability at your fingertips. In addition, this unique display can project over a billion colors, adding warmth to the futuristic design for an incredible driving experience.

You’ll find Cadillac’s Super Cruise technology standard in every Lyriq. This system delivers the first hands-free driver-assist system that genuinely lets you sit back and let the Lyriq do the driving. Super Cruise recognizes over 200,000 miles and growing roads and highways in North America. Super Cruise will keep you centered in your lane, change lanes when you signal, and adjust your speed and distance while in traffic.

The Power of Electric

The EPA has yet to test Lyriq’s driving range. However, Cadillac anticipates the Lyriq will travel over 300 miles on a fully charged battery. With the DC fast-charging capability, you can add up to 190 kW or 76 miles range in 10 minutes. Most Cadillac owners drive under 50 miles per day, making the Lyriq’s range more than enough. Add in the thousands of charging stations available in the Grand Forks, North Dakota, region, and there’s no end to your adventures.

The Level 2 at-home AC charging system will deliver 52 miles of charge every hour or 19.2 kW of charge per hour. Every Lyriq will have a dual onboard charging system with Level 2 and DC fast charging inputs. With this level of flexibility and capability, range anxiety will be a thing of the past in the Lyriq.

The rear-wheel-drive platform uses an Ultium battery and an electric motor. This powertrain puts out 340 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, ahead of most SUVs in its class.

Ultium Battery Power

GM has invested time and money to create the Ultium battery, which will power the Lyriq and every other electric vehicle they plan to produce. The Ultium battery, comprised of pouch-style cells in a large format, lets engineers stack the cells vertically or horizontally inside the battery. This new style allows designers the freedom to suit different powertrain layouts while maximizing storage capacity.

The sizes of Ultium batteries range from 50 kilo-watt-hours, all the way up to 200 kWh. As the technology continues to improve, Cadillac expects vehicle range on the Lyriq and subsequent models to reach more than 400 miles on a full charge. This powerful battery also impacts performance, creating on-demand power that moves a car from zero to 60 mph in as few as three seconds. The Lyriq will use a 200 kW fast-charging system with Level 2 and DC fast-charging capability.
